Fort Erie, Ont.-  Brett Warkentin scored 13 points and Victor Benjamins came off the bench to add 11 to lead the NAVS to a 72-16 victory over fellow Zone 3 members FESS in Fort Erie Thursday afternoon.

The Navs used a 19-3 run over a six-minute period at the end of the second quarter to take a 35-9 lead into the locker room at the break. “We ran the game and gave up no penetration, they try to suck you in and pitch it but we were prepared,” said Navs senior Mitchell Uku.

During one stretch, NCC scored points on seven straight possessions, four of those coming on jumpers from Warkentin allowing Coach Haughton to go to the bench in order to preserve player fitness.

NCC was a little undisciplined on the night as they got into early foul trouble keeping FESS holding on for parts of the game “We can’t play the way we’ve been playing when we face teams that will capitilize,” said Coach Haughton.

In the second half, NCC (9-0) built its lead to as many as 40 points with 3:44 remaining before FESS staged a little comeback. The NAVS answered and put the game on ice behind a 3 pointer from Josh Gakwaya who finished with 12 points.

“Had they made their free throws we are in a fight,” said Haughton. “You’re hoping they miss their free throws and they did.” Navs advance to the Zone 3 Finals on Friday afternoon with the tip set for 3:30pm on the campus of Niagara Christian.
